The SHALLOW Depth of Field TRAP
The SHALLOW Depth of Field TRAP
6 ESSENTIAL TIPS for BETTER PHOTOS
-
A shallow depth of field is an easy way to immediately set your images apart from phone snapshots and smaller, cheaper cameras. but if you always default to shooting wide open, you deny yourself the opportunity to develop some really key compositional skills.
Thoughtful attention to the adjustment of your depth of field is essential, as it plays a direct role in shaping the visual impact and storytelling elements within an image. Considerate manipulation of depth of field allows you to influence and craft both the narrative and aesthetics of your photography.
This video contains 6 essential tips for getting better depth of field in your photos. I look at the work of Alex Webb to see what we can learn from his amazing work.

8 IMPORTANT Composition Tips for Better Photos (Re-upload) So, you’re looking to improve your photography and you’re (rightfully) told that composition is the key to a great photo. You proceed to read up on compositional rules and you realise there’s a lot to learn. HIGH SPEED PHOTOGRAPHY - TUTORIAL & IDEAS

High speed photography is a fascinating and powerful form of image making. It may be something that you have shied away from because it seems too technical, and it can be very technical, but it doesn’t always need to be. Sometimes it can just be about releasing the shutter at the right point. In this video we look at high-speed photography as more of a concept for creating interesting images, r...

Why STREET PHOTOGRAPHY laws might change

Will facial recognition affect street photography? Facial recognition technology has already been fraught with controversy, but could websites like Clearview AI and Pimeyes.com change the laws around our ability to photograph people in the street? Will it change GDPR laws? Even if it doesn’t change GDPR laws, do we still have a moral obligation to adjust our practices? And if so, how should we ...

How to take CREATIVE LONG EXPOSURE photos

How to take CREATIVE LONG EXPOSURE photos One of the things that makes long exposure photography so striking is how it has the power completely alter your viewer’s whole perception of a place. With a long exposure, you are dealing with an extended passage of time, compressed down into a single image. It’s a form of photography that is very far removed from making images of the world we experien...

OF COURSE CAMERA GEAR MATTERS

OF COURSE CAMERA GEAR MATTERS I often get placed in the 'Gear Doesn't Matter' group, but I think the truth is more nuanced than that. My favourite walkaround camera of the moment is my Leica Q2. I really love this camera. But often if someone shoots on a Leica, they get labelled a poser or a hipster. But Cartier-Bresson shot on a Leica. Was he just a poser? Robert Capa shot on a Leica. Something else as just a perception from em, is as phones and other devices creep into our lives, certain shot looks have connotation they once did not now. A very separate foreground background that doesn't give range looks "generated" or greescreened to more people now and can work to cheapen the image.

So, what do I do with my modern Sony camera that nails focus each time and gives me a very accurate preview of the exposure? Should I get a manual focus lens?

I am autistic, I see things differently. I have no concept of emotion, mood, story in photography, and "the rule of thirds" is detrimental to good photography. Harvard surveyed some architects about their use of these socalled rules. "Very good," they said. "Do you use them in your work?" "Ooh, no." I am not currently blind in either eye, but they do point in slightly different directions, so effectively I have a monocular vision. Just like a camera.

Interesting video. To me it seems that Webbs photos have so many elements that one can draw lines all over the photo in any direction and argue that there is some logic to it, while to others (myself included) they just look like an unpleasant hectic mess.

Just to clarify something: an amateur is someone who does something for the love of it, it does not mean that they are incompetent. Any given amateur may well be more knowledgeable in their field than a comparable professional. In many cases, the amateur is more knowledgeable, more skilled, than the average professional whose focus is on making mone rather than being excellent. So be careful with your labels.

I always loved the portrait photography in the NatGeos issues of my childhood - shot in real film, with a lot of context around the subjects. Thinking about it now, I realize that what made those pictures so great was their use of natural lighting and composition without cheating to beautify by using very shallow depth of field.

  • @richardmaggio
    @richardmaggio 2 дні тому

Shoot any sort of landscape scene and you have to bring the scene into foucs with narrower aperture. It does make the shot more challenging because you have no choice but to consider the full composition. When i shoot portraits or sports, i find it much easier because you don't have to worry about the background as much and can blur it as much as possible. With sports shutter speed overrides all else usually. Great video!

It IS a LOT easier to "Experiment" today than when I began photography in the 1970ies! Back then you had to take the picture, develop the film (while in the dark, at least some of the time), print the picture on paper (again while in a VERY dark room with a red light as the only light), let it dry and then you could analyze what you did! Oh and also you only had a max of 36 pictures on a 35mm SLR to play with before you had to buy another roll of expensive film!

Another belter. Cheers Jamie. My bread and butter is commercial and wedding photography, but going off for a break with just a little G100 and slow 12-32 and 35-100 lenses, or an Oly XA, will put me in situations where I really have to consider what and who I am inviting into the frame. Can't just blast things into bokeh oblivion. Always come back with some rubbish, and then some really interesting shots that I really had to think about to make work :)
